Electronic System Design

Designing electronic systems requires the incorporation of many distinct development skills and managing multiple design constraints. Global design teams need to have robust domain expertise, skilled design implementation and verification engineering talent and leverage the best in class design methodologies and tools. Developing electronic systems on a global basis also requires exemplary communication between the various teams and the agility and flexibility to rapidly handle changing design requirements. Patni has built a product engineering organization with substantial experience in all of the necessary skills and tools to service the complete product development of electronic systems. Patni’s teams have developed electronics systems for a wide range of vertical markets including consumer electronics, medical electronics, automotive electronics, office automation, industrial automation, mobile & wireless and information storage and our teams can take the product from concept through to prototyping and system integration and test.

Printed Circuit Board Design
Patni’s board design team has extensive experience in designing new multi-layer boards for consumer, telecom, industrial control and medical systems, as well in re-engineering existing designs. Patni works with rapid prototype and large volume PCB manufacturers on design prototyping, transfer to production, and certification.  We have successfully executed many projects which have gone into high volume production. These are typically from the Medical, Industrial Automation and Consumer Electronics domains. We also have the capability and have developed products for cost conscious markets like consumer electronics and home appliances. We have robust design analysis and review process which includes DFx, FMEA and  MTBF calculation. This helps us to release designs which will bring out the lowest cost products at high-volume quantity.

ASIC/FPGA Design and Verification
VLSI Design
Patni’s VLSI  team has been providing design services in both ASIC and FPGA implementation. Patni’s team has extensive experience in implementing complex computation-intensive algorithms in Hardware and proven production experience in developing leading edge Systems-on-Chip (SoC) devices for a variety of applications: DSP, control, networking, telecom, and computing.
A well established design methodology ensures creation of a good quality and well commented code that adheres to the strict design rules. The code will be fully synthesizable and optimized for the application speed (i.e. inserting the necessary parallelism upfront). Patni’s experience with assertions will also be valuable in instrumenting the design with SVA assertions to achieve the highest possible verification coverage.
Patni team has completed many FPGA designs which included both high-complexity multi-chip systems using the largest and fastest devices and low-cost low-power designs. Patni has also worked on FPGA conversion to ASIC using cell-based, gate array and structured ASIC technologies.

VLSI Verification
Functional verification has been in the focus of Patni VLSI team for the last decade. Patni has an advanced verification methodology and used it successfully on 200+ projects. This verification methodology enables us to achieve more thorough verification and higher coverage without extending the verification schedule.
Using pre-existing verification IP for standard functions and protocols substantially reduces verification environment development. Patni offers an extensive library of verification components, including USB, I2C, SPI, HDMI/DVI, VGA, MII/GMII and DDR-2 interfaces.

Firmware, Driver and Software Development
PES is a technology-focused business unit that has extensive experience in development/migration of real-time, mission and safety critical applications using different Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) environments, e.g. embedded/real-time Linux and Windows, board support packages (BSP) and device drivers for various RTOSes.  Our world-class embedded technology labs are equipped with state of the art infrastructure and communication network environments for developments on multiple embedded processors/controllers from leading vendors, e.g. StrongARM, SH3/SH4, x86, PowerPC, XScale and DSP’s.  We are also equipped with development tools for various RTOSes, in particular VxWorks, Linux and WinCE environments, and software tools required for successful project-execution.
The group has extensive experience with product development/porting activities using the iterative model which provides the opportunity for close collaboration with customers through frequent intermediate deliverables, thus potentially eliminating risks in the early development stages.  Patni is experienced in developing BSP for a variety of hardware boards, including development/porting of the device-drivers for various peripherals such as Serial Communication Ports (RS232, RS485, RS422), SMSC91C111 Ethernet Communication, Graphics-display Controller, Touch Pad Controller, Keyboard Controller, PCI/PCMCIA/USB/ATA bus-architectures, Audio/Video drivers, etc.  Our experience also expands to process of migrating applications from existing development environments to newer ones using techniques like personality layers, i.e. shim layers.

Design for Manufacturability
Patni understands the design intent, manufacturing process capabilities and production volume to improve the manufacturability of products. Patni has set up a cross functional team of subject matter experts for design for manufacturability and related services.

Our services for Design for Manufacturability include:

  • Simplification of design and assembly to minimize non-value-added efforts and more efficient and effective manufacturing and assembly
  • Resolution of yield related issues in manufacturability to improve product quality, reliability and reduce manufacturing cost
  • Periodic design reviews including that of manufacturing experts to meet process capabilities and avoid unnecessary tolerances, complexity, etc.

Hardware Design Validation Testing
Patni offers independent design validation services for hardware, firmware and as a complete product through a sequence of testing. Patni follows its proprietary processes and uses in-house high-end test equipments. The validation tests include diagnostic tests, stress testing and real world functional testing verifying functionality, durability, and reliability. This type of test represents different test dimensions that are necessary to ensure that the product meets designer’s and end user’s expectations. Patni also prepares necessary documents and generates test reports to support this testing which can be used as evidence for regulatory requirements.

System Prototyping
Patni’s system prototyping team helps to convert ECAD graphics into electronic and/or electromechanical pre-production prototypes. Our prototyping proficiency enables our clients to get a better understanding of their product’s look & feel, functionality, cost-material benefits, and  conduct the product’s pre-compliance testing; thus avoiding the long wait to complete the development cycles and set-up of production lines.  Patni works with national and international vendors to develop prototypes and meet client expectations. 

Production Test Fixture Development (Factory Testing)
Patni with its extensive experience in product design and testing understands its clients’ requirements and provides customized solutions to meet specific needs. The testing solutions provided are either fully automated or semi-automated that require minimum operator’s intervention to reduce human error and time consumed leading to high production yield and quality products. Some of the specialized test automation software we use include LabVIEW, Python, Vectorcast, RTRT.
