The Client
A leading provider of
solutions for graphic
management and
production in the UK.
The Challenge
The client had an application for the packaging industry, which served
only a single customer. It wanted to build an enterprise solution for the
packaging industry with an advanced artwork development platform to
address the range of artwork creation issues. The challenge involved:
 |
Re-engineering the current application, which is a single customer
version to an enterprise edition, which provides multiple customer
support |
 |
Offering a user-friendly GUI to be used by graphics designers as well
as marketing personnelProven delivery capability |
 |
Providing a document management system for versioning of artwork
that is created by graphics designers |
 |
Integrating a PDF annotation tool for displaying comments at places
intended by the reviewer |
 |
Providing project management and automatic artwork generation
functionality in the application. |
The Solution
Patni proposed a fixed price offshore execution model. Patni designed and
developed the application offshore, and sent a team onsite for
implementation. A key achievement on the project was the excellent
rapport between the client and the offshore team resulting in quick query
resolution and approvals. On the architecture side, Patni suggested a
solution using Oracle Workflow Builder and standard business process,
envisioned to be common to all the product's customers. Any customerspecific
change required to the business process could be achieved
through customization.
Patni's solution approach comprised:
 |
Creating Web prototypes to clearly define requirements |
 |
Designing a 3-tier architecture using the Struts framework for the
presentation layer |
 |
Creating a plugin to Adobe Acrobat, enabling users to make
annotations during artwork reviews |
 |
Integrating an automated artwork generating tool to help quick
creation of artworks
application |
 |
Creating a digital asset manager using Oracle 9iFS for storage and
retrieval of artwork assets |
 |
Using workflow to manage various artwork projects and track the
ongoing phase |
 |
Logging a complete history of reworks and reviews of artworks. |
