Turnkey Verification of Router FPGAs and Boards

Leveraging Patni's verification expertise, a small startup router company saved over $75,000 in EDA license and infrastructure costs.

The Challenge

Our customer is a small, aggressive startup designing its first router product. The router includes content awareness and rich QOS features, resulting in several large boards each contain a mixture of complex FPGAs, programmable processors, and other large off-the-shelf components. The customer had an aggressive schedule for system development, with a fixed end date governed by demonstration at an interoperability show in order to close its first sale. Our customer did not have verification engineers, an existing verification methodology, or any verification tools, and they wanted to conserve venture capital by not investing in these areas.
The customer needed fast verification to allow tape-out of two complex boards and large FPGAs
The customer needed enough verification to minimize lab bring-up and software integration of the complete system
The customer did not want to invest in verification engineers, tools, or testbench development.
 

The Solution

Patni's PREP Verification Methodology

Patni uses the existing and proven PREP verification environment to allow productive verification work immediately
Patni library of SVCs provides 4 of the 5 transactors (BFMs) needed for verification
Patni FPGA verification methodology focuses on large datapaths, discrete functions, and key configurations. FPGA and board pinout and floorplan are quickly confirmed, and critical operation is efficiently verified at optimal cost
Patni board verification methodology uses connectivity extracted from board schematics, and simulates processor boot-up and device access to facilitate rapid lab integration at minimal cost.
Patni Outsourcing
Patni consultants are familiar with the functions and protocols and rapidly create the testplan and begin verification
Patni performs the verification as an outsource project, using EDA and compute infrastructure in its Design Center
Patni consultants install a regressable test suite at the client site and train the client to support maintenance and ECOs of the boards.
 

The Benefits

The turnkey outsource verification is completed on schedule, and the boards are built on time. The PREP verification environment and existing SVCs saved over 2 calendar months on the verification schedule relative to starting from scratch
The verification results in no hardware bugs on the simulated boards and FPGAs. System integration proceeds on plan and the system is successfully demonstrated
The turnkey outsource delivery saved the customer nearly $100,000 in EDA licenses and infrastructure, and over $100,000 in salary cost relative to provisioning an inhouse verification team. The customer can now support regressions of the design, without the salary cost of an ongoing verification team, and has saved over $200,000 in carrying cost of the engineers between product releases.
