| Abstract |
Image Processing as a technique has grown multifold in its usage over the last couple of years. It
has been applied to a number of domains like Consumer Electronics, Medical Electronics,
Automotive Electronics, Industrial Automation, Biomedical, Space Technology, for a variety of
innovative system development. This includes development of very simple to extremely complicated
and sophisticated imaging systems for solving practical requirements.
Some such advanced imaging applications:
- The rover named "Sojourner" of NASA's "Mars Pathfinder" mission is equipped with a
sophisticated imaging system. The images acquired by it were used for assessing the condition
of the rover after touchdown, studying the samples of soil and rocks, finding the location of
larger features, etc.
- In the field of medical technology, machines such as CT Scan use ingenious application of
image processing algorithms and techniques to generate high quality images for doctors to
make accurate diagnosis.
- In the field of security systems, for human face recognition, thumb print recognition and eye
retinal scans.
- In the pharmaceutical industry, to find out the missing tablet in the tablet strip inspection.
- In the rubber industry, to measure the inner diameter, outer diameter and the flashes of the
o-ring, washers.
Patni has strong expertise in the area of image processing. We have designed and implemented
sophisticated systems involving the use of various imaging concepts and algorithms.
This Paper dwells on a new approach for a very simple but practical application of image processing in the field of hardness testing of materials.
