Enabling new revenue streams via world's
largest VoIP and converged billing systems launch |
|
|
Patni's VoIP billing solution addressed the critical delivery objectives in a cost-effective, risk-managed
engagement model, increased revenue streams, eliminated unnecessary manual business processes and
increased customer satisfaction due to consolidated billing.
The Client
A major US cable company
principally involved in the
development, management and
operation of broadband cable
networks and programming
content. It offers a variety of
entertainment, high-speed
Internet, and digital cable
products as well as multiple
voice products including digital
phones and local service with
many features, services and
packages.
The Challenge
VoIP services are a vital component of the long-term revenue increase and
cost optimization strategy for many carriers - providing new carriers access
to previously unavailable customer premises, and providing existing carriers
increased use of network resources by not requiring a dedicated circuit and
distributing the cost model more widely. With a large existing circuitswitched
installed base, this client desired new revenue streams via VoIP
market entry while simultaneously providing a seamless billing and customer
care experience across its many existing and successful service offerings.
Key engagement responsibilities included:
 |
Enabling new VoIP product launch and accelerated development on
aggressive timeline |
 |
Seamless bill integration and consolidated billing infrastructure to
support a consolidated, detailed bill, promoting a hosted rather than
leased application billing model |
 |
Operational efficiencies, cost-effectiveness & maximum re-use of
existing systems |
 |
Flexible, high-availability, high performance BSS and billing
infrastructure to support new VoIP usage-based models and adaptable
to changing regulatory, legal and tax guidelines. |
The Solution
Patni's VoIP billing solution addressed the critical delivery objectives in a cost-effective,
risk-managed engagement model while maintaining a very aggressive delivery schedule.
Patni was responsible for the overall program management, vendor management and
solution architecture. For increased flexibility, a sophisticated project management
methodology was used, which supported new and updated requirements and near-realtime
visibility, with minimum overhead while maintaining constant and aggressive delivery
cycles.
Patni concluded it best to use a single scalable mediation platform, expandable to support
circuit-switched telephony as well as VoIP telephony and externalized telecom revenue
functions from legacy systems that are a high risk to change. To ensure the optimal
customer experience and highest cost-efficiencies, key OSS applications were integrated,
including multiple ordering, mediation, tax, billing and financial applications.
Billing integration streams, including staged billing, were also implemented which allowed
feeder systems to contribute to an invoice as well as enable near-real-time, web-based
presentation to the customer.
The resultant VoIP Billing solution extended the client's existing OSS/BSS with full
automation of the core application interfaces:
 |
Rules-based convergent mediation application supporting all major call record
formats |
 |
Current Activity / Billed Usage history application with access to detailed usage
records as well as a Usage Archive application with Reporting, Legal, Revenue
Assurance and Fraud Detection components |
 |
Rating / Aggregation configurable billing module, tightly integrated with the
tax application to support a wide variety of tax modules |
 |
OSS-wide application and component integration, and integration between the
mediation and inter-carrier billing applications |
 |
Web-based consolidated bill presentment application for all VoIP, cable
and voice services. |
Highlights of the engagement include:
 |
Comprehensive VoIP billing vendor identification, evaluation and management |
 |
Design and implementation of a single, scalable mediation platform for all
telecom usage (circuit-switch, VoIP, OS/DA) as well as an innovative, flexible
and scalable architecture and framework enabling faster launch of new future
products |
 |
Solid, flexible framework leveraging legacy OSS.
