Customer Portal for leading fleet
management company

Patni enabled a leading fleet management company to provide its customers personalized, actionable
information of operation critical KPIs and alerts through a scalable and secure portal.
The Client
The client is one of the largest
leasing and fleet management
companies in the world.
The Challenge
A leader in its domain, the client provided a host of value added services to its
clients for helping them manage their fleet in a better way. These included
providing the client information on different metrics such as vehicle
maintenance, fuel utilization, mileage, maintenance and expenses related to
fleet management.
For providing these services, the client relied on a diverse IT landscape
consisting of different applications that were specific to certain services. For
example, billing reports were generated from a mainframe application, while
fuel or maintenance related reports were provided through a web based
application. Depending on the type of metrics a customer wanted, the client
manually consolidated all the information from different reports and
presented it in the form of an excel sheet or MS Access based reports to the
customer.
As the reports were generated using detailed transactions, it was a time
consuming process to generate different business critical analytical and
operational reports. An additional level of complexity was added due to
different reporting mechanisms followed by different business units. Further,
as the process was manual, there was a higher probability of error. A customer
survey reinforced this view, with customers citing the need for improvements
in quality and presentation of information specifically for timeliness,
accuracy, simplicity and relevance.
To address these issues, the client decided to build a customer portal that was
aimed at quickly providing the customer accurate, personalized and
actionable information.
The Solution
Patni used its proprietary Business Intelligence Development Roadmap based on IIDM
(Incremental and Iterative Development Methodology) to develop the customer portal.
Drawing upon its strong domain knowledge, Patni did a detailed analysis of business
requirements and assisted the client in finalizing a list of key metrics that could be part of
the customer dashboard. To ensure accuracy of information, a comprehensive data quality
assessment was done. For developing the solution, Patni used Business Objects for
reporting needs and TIBCO as the Portal for presenting the information according to
different parameters.
Subsequently, Patni delivered a proof of concept that highlighted integration of multiple
technology components - Business Objects and J2EE for reporting and TIBCO portal for
presenting the information.
With the objective of providing the customer a single point for
providing actionable information with respect to different
parameters, the dashboard was divided into three key sections
namely Profile, Key Performance Indicator (KPI), and Alerts and
Warnings. Each of these elements had drill-down capabilities, and
could be further analyzed according to different parameters. For
example, asset costs could be analyzed using different dimensions,
and subsequently used to do a trend analysis. Security was enhanced
by invoking LDAP for providing role based access control.
