Large Natural Gas Distributor Selects
Patni to Enhance its Gas Operations
System |
|
|
The Client
One of the largest natural
gas distribution company in
the United States and the
largest in the Southeast.
As the oldest continuously
operating company in
Atlanta, the company
maintains a network of
pipes and meters for over
1.4 million customers.
The Challenge
When Georgia deregulated natural gas distribution across the state, the
company found itself in a new business environment. To prepare for the
changes ahead, the client decided to redesign and enhance its existing Gas
Operations System. The new Gas Operations System was required to provide
the following capabilities:
 |
Reflect a list of natural gas distributors |
 |
Control distribution |
 |
Provide meter reads for certified marketers to control gas assets |
 |
Automate the interface between the utility company and the
interstate pipeline companies. |
The objective was to implement solutions that would incorporate
deregulation legislations, within a stipulated timeframe and with minimum
costs. This was to be carried out in conjunction with relevant GISB standards.
The Solution
Patni provided the gas distribution company the flexibility to respond rapidly,
and was chosen to enhance the system.
Patni was involved in:
 |
Development of the Asset Ranking and Usage Calculation modules |
 |
EDI-based data transfers for pipeline companies |
 |
Successful interpretation of de-regulation legislations and the modification
of Gas Distribution Regulated model to De-regulated model. |
The enhanced system enables marketers to:
 |
Pull gas from interstate pipelines without having to give notice to the
company, also called as Firm Transport Number Notice (FTNN) asset |
 |
Access the GOS application remotely for nominations and gas tradingrelated
activities. |
The Benefits
 |
Flexible system design for assimilating future changes |
 |
More effective management of the marketers' assets through greater process
control |
 |
Potential new revenue possibilities for the marketers (buy and sell FTNN
assets)
|
 |
Flexible system design to take care of multiple interstate pipeline companies |
 |
More control over operation enabling effective asset management. |
