Patni helps leading jet engine manufacturer
implement Warehouse Management System |
By partnering with Patni to implement a warehouse management system, a leading manufacturer of jet
engines significantly reduced its order to shipment cycle time.
The Client
The client is a leading producer of large and small jet engines for commercial and military
aircrafts. It also supplies aircraft derived engines for marine applications and provides aviation services.
The Challenge
The client wanted to replace its existing legacy warehouse management
system (WMS) with a robust product to respond proactively to competition
and changing business dynamics.
The existing WMS deployed by the client was fraught with many issues such
as:
 |
Longer cycle times due to non-optimum traveling path during picking
operations |
 |
Paper based operations at all stages of picking, packing and shipping |
 |
Location dependent operations due to desktop based systems |
 |
Data entry errors due to manual operations. |
The Solution
Patni helped the client overcome the challenges by implementing and customizing a
warehouse management system from Optum. A team from Patni worked in close
coordination with the client to understand the new product so that it could be customized
seamlessly with the existing order, shipping and billing system.
The following activities were performed by Patni:
 |
Designing and developing 'upload' & 'download' interfaces between WMS and other
peripheral systems catering to the Order-Shipping-Billing, manufacturing, sourcing and
data warehousing functions |
 |
Performing detailed evaluation of existing paper shipping documents (e.g. Memo of
Shipment, Pack list, Kit list, Pack Worksheet, Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoice etc.) and
developing their electronic versions in PDF format |
 |
Implementing 'dynamic' printing of Pick Label, Shipping Label, etc. at appropriate
stages of order processing using Zebra RFID printers |
 |
Resolving end user queries and helping them understand the new system |
 |
Doing enhancements to the existing product. |

The Benefits
By partnering with Patni, the client achieved the following
benefits:
 |
Significant reduction in order-to-shipment cycle time due to
replacement of paper-intensive system by the new centralized
WMS |
 |
Reduced cycle time due to optimum traveling path during
picking operations |
 |
Robust process compliance through event based printing of
shipping documents |
 |
Location flexibility for picking and packing operations |
 |
Removal of human errors in data entry as RF scanners were used
to read barcodes and provide data inputs to the WMS. |
